Structure

Governance

The community made use of a non-linear rank structure, where each service had an isolated hierarchy of staff. The highest-ranking members of each hierarchy reported to a group of individuals that jointly acted as the community's owners. The top of each hierarchy had administrators, with each service typically having 1-3 of them at any given time. Administrators reported to super administrators. The super administrators made decisions that effected the larger community and oversaw the work of the administrators.[3]

Below administrators were senior moderators, who were primarily charged with training moderators. Moderators were tasked with day-to-day moderation.[3] Lateral to moderators were the positions of clerk and plugin engineer. Clerks were responsible for assisting the management team with the upkeep of internal documentation and records.[4] Plugin engineers were responsible for creating, maintaining, and fixing plugins for the SCP: Secret Laboratory servers.[5]

A position known as senior administrator also existed, which acted as a managerial role for administrators that reported directly to the super administrators.[6] It was discontinued shortly after it was introduced.[3]

At the community's inception it was originally intended that the rank structure would be more linear, where administrators would jointly be responsible for managing all services provided simultaneously. The outcome of an internal poll sent to the staff team in February of 2020 showed that the administrators were dissatisfied with that decision, resulting in the structure described above.[3]

Network Partnership Program

On May 3, 2020 the community launched a "network partnership program". It allowed members who met certain conditions and guidelines to receive support and advertisement for a hosted service owned by the relevant member. The advertisement was performed in the form of a pinged message to all members of the primary Lunarys Discord server. The provided support was in the form of dedicated public text channels, a dedicated voice channel, and a private text channel that simultaneously acted as a direct line of communication to the Lunarys management team.[7]

The program remained available to members up until the community shut down. A total of 3 services were made available to the community under the program.

  • Minecraft hosted by Burbs, announced October 10, 2020.[8]
  • Space Station 13 hosted by Slude, announced February 9, 2021.[9]
  • Garry's Mod hosted by Sirdog, announced June 13, 2021.[10]

On August 8, 2021 Sirdog announced to the community that a wiki originally only accessible to the staff team was made available to the public.[11] The home page featured the slogan "The storehouse of all information and knowledge of use to the community", a staff team roster, and tables that displayed navigational hyperlinks.[12]

The website held various documents, such as the staff team's handbook, the terms and conditions of the network partnership program, and the policy relating to how the benefits purchased on Patreon are obtained and used.[13][7][14]

The entire wiki was released under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 License.[15] It was deprecated on March 9, 2022.[16]

Finances

The operating cost for the community was US$50 monthly.[17]

Controversy

2020 removal of community leader

On June 13, 2020, it was announced that super administrator The_Rekoning was removed their position for "behavioral problems that have been exhibited and their effects on the relationship between the community and leadership staff".[28]

Members inquired as to if The_Rekoning would be replaced. Super administrator BlueNova stated that there were no plans to do so, as such a person would not serve a purpose.[31] Fauna challenged BlueNova, arguing that when the community was formed a stated intention was to avoid super administrators needing to have a specific purpose.[32] BlueNova later commented that, while each super administrator did not have their own purpose, there "[didn't] seem to be enough work to go around... to be shared among four".[33]

It was later pointed out by The_Rekoning that the original announcement stated they had stepped down rather than having been removed involuntarily,[34] with super administrators BlueNova and Sirdog apologizing for the error.[34][35] It was noted by SimonSimon that the error was "unprofessional and disgusting to see" and that the error "should have never, ever been made", with others expressing agreement.[36]

Sirdog announced 2 hours after the original announcement that a "mini-community meeting" was taking place in the Lobby channel of the Discord server, where they and BlueNova were available to answer questions relating to The_Rekoning's removal.[37] The_Rekoning declined to join the voice channel.[38]

2021 sabotaged event

On January 30, 2021, Foxpox hosted a "Minecraft 1 Hour Hardcore Speedrun" event. The goal of the event was for participants to beat Minecraft in 1 hour with anyone who died being forced to spectate.[39] At 10:50pm Eastern Mooly Wammoth uploaded a 24 second video clip to #events-discussion of participants entering the End portal.[40] According to HypedFreak, the video showed JoeMama punching everyone into the End dimension's void.[41] This sparked a conversation regarding JoeMama's behavior, alongside members offering sympathies to Foxpox.

EMP Fingers, a then administrator for the SCP: Secret Laboratory service, sent the following message at 11:14pm.

You know what my favorite part about this is?

The staff team saw that Joe was the kind of toxic, stupid person to do shit like this months ago and they've been harassed and had accusations of abuse and favoritism tossed at them ever since he got banned. Then he's allowed to join into this event and blows everything up. But hey, who could have ever seen this coming, amirite?[42]

potato117 expressed disapproval with EMP Fingers' comment, explaining that while being mad with JoeMama was understandable, calling them stupid was improper.[43] EMP Fingers was apathetic to potato117's position[44]

A meta discussion regarding how JoeMama was being spoken about followed, with some voicing displeasure with alleged antagonism,[45][46] and others voicing that the alleged antagonism was warranted.[47][48] A call was made for the channel to be locked, which failed.[49][50] potato117, later in the conversation, expressed frustration that members of management and leadership were "insulting joe".[46] Relevant members countered that they were providing objective assessment's of JoeMama's character.[51][47]

The conversation was formally closed by Sushiloid at 12:01am on January 31.[52]

2021 fiction spoilers discourse

On October 30, 2021 ma1kawa11 commented in the Discord server's #general channel that they had finished the Netflix original series Squid Game, resulting in conversation.[53] Shortly after the originating comment, Monstrosity and HypedFreak entered the conversation, and they quickly expressed contempt with ma1kawa11 for not marking spoilers, with Monstrosity commenting "Just absolutely fucking filling the chat with every spoiler possible... lmao".[54] In reply, ma1kawa11 said "they spoiled everything for me too earlier before I finished it... it's your turn now mwahahahahahahaha".[55]

ma1kawa11 received push-back, with potato117 commenting that it was a "shit thing to do", in which Fauna agreed.[56] A back and forth took place, culminating in HypedFreak sending a message in all caps, expressing that the hostility directed at ma1kawa11 was "unacceptable".[57] Shortly thereafter Cloud, a then administrator for the Discord server, ordered participants to cease speaking.[58] This was followed by Cloud commenting "also don't talk about shit thats currently popular in general without spoiling", followed by "you guys are fucking retarded for doing that." The latter message was edited 4 hours later with the phrase crossed out.[59]

ma1kawa11 responded to Cloud's comment 2 minutes later in a rejected fashion, ending their message with "anyway see ya'll I'm out".[60] EMP Fingers, a then super administrator, asked Cloud at 2:03pm - 40 minutes after the conversation began - if #general should be placed under slow mode "for a few hours". Cloud agreed.[61]

Members commented that the slow mode appeared to be lifted 2 and a half hours later at 4:35pm.[62]
