Lunarys was an SCP: Secret Laboratory community established on December 23, 2019 as a migration away from another community.[1] It was shut down on December 20, 2022 to rebrand itself as LunarysX.[2] This was following a 10-month period of inactivity after leadership of the community was transferred away on March 17, 2022.[3]

Structure

Governance

The community made use of a non-linear rank structure, where each service had an isolated hierarchy of staff. The highest-ranking members of each hierarchy reported to a group of individuals that jointly acted as the community's owners. The top of each hierarchy had administrators, with each service typically having 1-3 of them at any given time. Administrators reported to super administrators, a group comprised of 4 members at its apex. The super administrators made decisions that effected the larger community and oversaw the work of the administrators.

Below administrators were senior moderators, who were primarily charged with training moderators. Moderators were tasked day-to-day service moderation.

A position known as senior administrator also existed, which acted as a managerial role for administrators that reported directly to the super administrators. It was discontinued shortly after it was introduced.[4]

At the community's inception it was originally intended that the rank structure would be more linear, where administrators would jointly be responsible for managing all services provided simultaneously. The outcome of an internal poll sent to the staff team in February of 2020 showed that the administrators were dissatisfied with that decision, resulting in the structure described above.[4]

Infrastructure

The community hosted a variety of services using a virtual private server rented from the company NFO Servers. The monthly cost was $50 USD. The specifications were 8 virtual CPU cores, 8.1 gigabytes of RAM, 500 gigabytes of storage, and 4.8 terabytes of file transfer bandwidth.[5]

The services hosted included:

  • 4 SCP: Secret Laboratory servers running simultaneously
  • A website
  • Various Discord bots
  • A Minecraft server
  • A Garry's Mod server

History

Chronology of events

2019

On December 23, a vast majority of management, leadership, and other members from the community Hydra Gaming leave simultaneously, resulting in the creation of Lunarys.[4]

Between December 24 and 31, the community creates the server and structure necessary to staff Minecraft, and applications to apply for staffing positions are made available.[4]

2020

In January, servers and structures for staffing are created for SCP: Secret Laboratory and Garry's Mod, with the latter running the game mode Trouble in Terrorist Town. In the same month, a handbook for the staff team is released.[4]

In February, the senior administrator position is introduced, bots displaying the active player count for the SCP: Secret Laboratory servers are launched, the Minecraft server transitions to being a modded server, and the administrator position becomes tied to a service.[4]

In March, a public statement is released from super administrator Sirdog regarding how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting the staff team's performance.[6] In the same month, a Patreon subscription service is released.[4]

In April, the Minecraft server is shut down and a community forum is launched.[4]

In May, the Patreon is changed to charge patrons immediately rather than on the 1st of the following month due to abuse. In the same month, the senior administrator position is deprecated, and the network partnership program is released.[4]

In July, the senior moderator position is introduced.[4]

In August, a 3rd SCP: Secret Laboratory server is launched, and the Garry's Mod server is placed in a "status" due to "operational and development concerns".[4]

In October, a MediaWiki instance is launched specifically for the staff team and the Garry's Mod server is shut down.[4]

2021

In February, Space Station 13 is introduced as the first sponsored service from Lunarys under it's network partnership program. It was later shut down in April.[4]

In May, another Trouble in Terrorist Town Garry's Mod server is launched. The following month, it would be demoted to the status equivalent of a sponsored service.[4]

In August, the MediaWiki instance was transitioned from being for the staff team only to being for the community in general. In the same month, 3 additional SCP: Secret Laboratory servers are launched to take part in the developer's Parabellum beta.[7][4]

In September, community member EMP Fingers becomes a super administrator temporarily to assist with prolonged vacancy.[4]

2022

On January 20, super administrator Sirdog announces that various internal management discussions are made available for public review for transparency.[8]

On February 16, super administrator Sirdog announces that the community is going to "undergo a major restructuring" wherein they become the sole owner.[9]

On March 17, Sirdog - the then owner - announces that a selection process for a new owner has begun.[10]

On March 21, Sirdog announces that community member EMP Fingers was voted in as the new owner, providing a document breaking down how the votes were tallied.[11]
