Template:Media auth/doc

This template is used in accordance with the project's policy on using media as a source and is mandatory when tagging relevant files.

Parameters

Note: If auth= is n no other parameters are needed, though it is highly recommended to include article=. If auth= is y all parameters are needed.

Parameter Purpose
auth= Determines whether the media is marked as authenticated or not. Use y or n.
This should only be changed to y by administrators or authenticators.
article= The article name, in plain text, that the media is being used at.
date= The date authentication was last performed.
auther= The name of the user who performed authentication in plain text.
auth_rank= The position of the authenticator. Use sysop, admin or authenticator.

Administrator instructions

The goal of an administrator review is to ensure, within your best judgement, that the file has not been modified using 3rd party tools and is a true and proper capture of the source material.

The source of the file should have been placed on the file's talk page, per the template. If not, you can reach out to the uploading editor to get assistance from them directly. If possible, you can also attempt to find the source yourself, such as reverse-Google searching the text in the file to find a relevant website.

Any modification present in the file that is not present within the source is unacceptable. This includes censoring names, changing text, adding any elements to the file (such as highlight, shapes, arrows, etc), or using cropping to remove portions of a message. This applies even if the modification is to remove material that violates project policies, such as to artificially remove material that would introduce copyright concerns to the project or to hide inappropriate images. This should be performed via organic cropping. If cropping cannot resolve the potential issue, then the source may not be used.

For a file to pass review, you should have confidence beyond a reasonable doubt that no modification is present.

If you cannot locate the source, and attempts to contact the uploading editor have been unsuccessful for more than 3 days, then the review is automatically failed.

Concluding a review

If the file passes review, flip auth= to y and ensure all parameters for the template are filled in. Once you do this, a category is going to be added to the file called [[Category:Media used as a source at {{{article}}}]] where {{{article}}} is the article's title in the template. If the link is red, you will need to create this category page (click the red link) with the text [[Category:Authenticated media by page]]. Once the link is blue, you are good to go.

Also ensure, before you move on, that the original source for the file (e.g Discord invite link, website URL, YouTube link, etc) is present on the file's talk page. If it isn't, put it there yourself, so as to be inline with P:V.

If the file fails review, then you need to delete the file entirely. You must document when deleting the file that it's deletion is due to failing a P:MAV review. Then, notify the editor via their talk page of your rationale for failing it. You may either invite them to upload another version of the file (after deletion) that falls in line with policy, or you can prohibit them from doing so again, depending on the circumstances.
