The Walking Den

The Walking Den (a play-on-words referencing the post-apocalyptic television series The Walking Dead) was a series of parody videos directed, edited, and produced by Archer. They featured the profile avatars of members from Disaster Den overlayed onto the faces of characters from various fictional universes, such as from the anime television series Fate/stay night and Attack on Titan. Some episodes were tied together with dialogue and plot, while others focused on the comedy of certain members being personified by characters and their situations.

The series was achieved through the use of key framing and the utilization of the audience's inability to understand spoken Japanese. For an episode with scripted dialogue, the original subtitles were replaced with the desired text.

The earliest mention of the series was on October 4, 2018 by Archer in the general channel of the Disaster Den Discord.[5] 2 spinoffs were produced by Archer, being Heaven's Den (referencing the anime film series Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel) and Fear the Walking Den (referencing the spin-off television series Fear the Walking Dead).

The episodes originally released on the YouTube channel Zabivodka, owned by Archer, but were taken down.[6] A Google Drive folder containing all episodes for The Walking Den and it's spinoffs, out of order and unmarked, was made known on December 31, 2019.[7]

History

Chronology of events

On May 10, Kira announces the Discord server attained 500 members.[15]

On June 24, Kira announces that one of the SCP:SL servers was granted US-WEST official status by Northwood Studios.[16]

On July 29, Kira announces the Discord server attained 1,000 members.[17]

On September 24, Trails - a former head administrator - announces that he is leaving, citing SCP:SL going stale and the community being "cancerous".[18]

On October 8, Kira submits a ping to a generic role advertising a server run by their girlfriend. They submit another advertisement on October 9 with a ping to all server members.[19]

On December 11, Kira advertises the Kurva Gaming Discord server, citing that "inner drama" caused them to lose a chunk of their member base.[20]

2019

On January 12, Kira announces that the results of a poll indicated that a NSFW channel would not be created.[21]

On January 17, Kira sends an announcement asking certain members to stop "pretending to be furries/degenerates". The cited motivation for the announcement was due to the behavior causing prospective members to be dissuaded from joining. They note that this does not apply to people who are genuinely exhibiting the relevant behavior.[22]

On February 2, Kira announces that the ability to post media in the server's #general channel is revoked and requires a separate permission that staff must assign.[23]

On April 7, Kira announces the Discord server attained 2,500 members.[24]

On June 12, Kira announces that a member named Face won a contest to design a Discord banner and animated logo. They allegedly won a $20 Steam gift card.[25]

On June 18, Kira announces that until the traditional summer vacation period ends members with "freebie steam accounts"[c] will be prohibited from joining to curb an influx of hacking players.[26]

On July 24, Kira sends out a staff application. This is notably the first time that staff were petitioned for in a public manner.[27] The application closed 2 days later on July 26.[28]

On April 7, Kira announces the Discord server attained 3,500 members.[29]

2020

On January 7, Kira announces that a DDoS attack against Disaster Den was repelled with little effort.[30]

On March 20, Kira announces that due to consistent complaints of toxicity, and bad actors taking advantage of leverage in the rules, that they were updated so as to "tight up the way [Disaster Den] handle[s] things".[31]

On April 7, Kira announces the Discord server attained 4,000 members.[32]

2021-2023

On May 4, 2021 Kira announces that they are taking a hiatus due to dissatisfaction with how members handle issues regarding Disaster Den.[33] They return from this hiatus 5 days later on May 9.[34]

On May 5, Hynx announces that the role of administrator is splitting so that there will be administrators specifically for Discord and SCP:SL, rather than administrators acting the same across all services.[35]

On August 28, 2022 Archer announces the Discord server attained 5,000 members.[36]

On September 16, Kira announces that he is stepping down and transferring ownership to Archer.[3]

On April 4, 2023 Archer announces that they are taking a hiatus due to a family member passing away.[37]

Controversy

2020 rule change on slurs

On October 10, 2020 Kira announced that the rules governing usage of slurs were changed. Previously, the usage of "racial, homophobic, transphobic or antisemitic slurs" were only disallowed if used in a derogatory manner. The change made the usage of such slurs, regardless of context, disallowed.[38]

The cited reason for the change was to address users who would use the "in a derogatory manner" provision to justify the usage of the slurs "all the time". Vesper would later clarify that slurs were never intended to be used as frequently as they were. The offenders leaned on the leniency of staff members who would not take action since the usage was not derogatory, resulting in the slurs becoming more casual than staff desired.[39]

Kira would comment in the general channel later that morning that freedom of speech as a concept was important to them, but that they remained firm in their decision, not wishing a minority to cause prospective members to "shy away".[40]

On October 14, Kira angrily stated in the general channel that members FreedomEagle and Slime were the "root of [the] problem", citing that they were "ruining the rule for everyone else".[41] Bovix, an administrator, commented that they disagreed.[42] Kira threatened to demote Bovix from staff if they did not "stop fucking talking",[43] to which Bovix took offense, stating that Kira's reaction to their statement was unproportionate and disrespectful.[44][45] Bovix would later express understanding, commenting that Kira was angry, and that they had faith Kira would not action the threat.[46] Kira did not comment on the incident further.

On October 20, a new announcement by Kira declared that the rule change was mostly reversed. It was identical to what it was prior with an additional provision that "excessive" use was also disallowed. Kira clarified that they were changing tact on how they wished to handle the issue, changing from blanket banning slurs to simply removing the problematic members.

As a result, the members Slime, FreedomEagle, SpaceCat, Ted, and DK Crab were declared by Kira to be permanently banned.[47]

Footnotes

  1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 Each message in Discord announcing the episode from Archer stated they were Episode 3.
  2. Given that there is only 1 tier, numerically, the community should be making more per month than what Patreon reports. It is likely many members are paying less than the minimum $2.50, as Patreon permits patrons to pay custom amounts.
  3. It was later clarified that the technical restriction from joining affected any Steam account that had not spent at least $5.
