This is done by adding [[Template:Copyright attribution talk]] (if not already present) to '''the top''' of the article's talk page. This will create a new section labeled "Copyright attribution". All future attribution of copyright on the article can be done by adding various [[Template:Copyright attribution table]] templates underneath the newly created section. After the table is complete, an editor must [[wikipedia:Help:Signature|add their signature]] underneath their template invocation (e.g <code><nowiki>~~~~</nowiki></code> beneath the table). The reuse of text verbatim is prohibited by Online Communipedia unless it is released under a compatible Creative Commons license, is in the public domain, or it is a quotation from an individual which is properly attributed. Editors must take great care to not [[wikipedia:Plagiarism|plagiarize]] a written work or paraphrase too closely. The former is prohibited due to ethical and legal considerations. The latter may constitute a copyright violation and/or an infringement on an [[wikipedia:Moral rights|author's moral rights]], given that it may be seen as a mutilation of the original work.

See [[Template:Copyright attribution table]]'s documentation for more information.

=== Taking text from Wikipedia ===
== Media ==
When taking content from Wikipedia, per their [[wikipedia:Wikipedia:Reusing Wikipedia content|policy on reusing Wikipedia content outside of the site]], providing ''all'' of the following in an edit summary is suitable attribution and the process above may be circumvented.
A majority of media used at Online Communipedia will be non-free given that, due to the project's mission, media is needed to verify and source information per our [[Project:Content policy|content policy]]. As such, the usage of media is subject to more lengthy guidelines.
* An ''explicit declaration'' that content was taken from Wikipedia.
* A link to the BY-SA 3.0 license.
* A link to the page that content was taken from.
* An ''explicit declaration'' of whether or not the taken content was modified in any way.

The following is a boilerplate that can be used (obviously the last sentence should be changed based on the circumstances, but it is ''very rare'' that content taken is not modified ''in some form''):
=== Non-free ===
<pre>Content in this edit was taken from Wikipedia. This content is licensed under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/. The content was originally from <FULL URL TO PAGE>. The content taken from Wikipedia has been modified.</pre>
Non-free media is designated as any image, video, file, or other item which is not written text within an article, which does not have an '''explicit declaration from the original copyright holder''' that it is released under a compatible license or in the public domain. Such media may only be uploaded if it meets ''all'' of the following conditions:
* It is...
** Being used as a source for an article, and thus is being used to verify statements made in relation to a community; or
** Being used as a source to verify that a community is [[Project:Content policy#Private communities|private]] as part of the invocation of [[Template:Private community declaration]]; or
** Being used as the identifying image of a community through [[Template:Infobox community]], and therefore is the community's logo.
* It does not infringe on any other [[:Category:Project policies|policy of this project]].
* It is not information which may infringe the copyright holder's ability to get value out of it.<ref>Such as screenshoting any material, text or media, intended only for donators to a community.</ref>
* It is not a derivative work of its original.<ref>Such as fanart of the community itself or any of it's members, a holiday themed version of the community's logo, etc.</ref>
* There is no other free version of the material that can be obtained.<ref>For example, if a community has an official variation of it's logo that may be in the public domain (see [[Template:PD-Simple]]), that should be used over the copyrighted version.</ref>
* It is attributed appropriately at [[Special:Upload]].

The above conditions have been written so as to maximize the chance that the media has a fair use rationale. If any of the conditions are not met the piece of non-free media is ineligible for inclusion and may be deleted on sight by any administrator.

== Images ==
Upon upload the source of the material must be explicitly provided within the summary. Even should an image possess a sufficient fair use rationale, if the source is not provided by someone upon challenge within 7 days, it may be deleted on sight by any administrator.
For the sake of minimizing the legal liability of the project, the image ''must'' fall under one of the following [[wikipedia:Creative Commons|Creative Commons]] licenses:

<div style="column-count:2">
=== Free ===
*CC0
Free media is designated as any image, video, file, or other item which is not written text within an article, which has an '''explicit declaration from the original copyright holder''' that it is released under a compatible license or in the public domain.

</div>

Or it must meet one of the following criteria:
Free media may be used with no restriction so long as the appropriate license is selected at [[Special:Upload]] and the source, along with attribution (if applicable), is provided in the image summary. Media under CC0 or in the public domain does not necessitate attribution or mention of its license, but Online Communipedia requires it nonetheless.

*The image is comprised of simple geometric shapes and words and thus under [[commons:Commons:Threshold_of_originality|United States copyright law]]<ref>The guidance provided by Wikimedia Commons is used when determining this rationale.</ref> is not original enough for copyright protection.<ref>This does not permit inclusion if the work is copyrighted outside of the United States</ref>
*The image is a logo being used in accordance with [[wikipedia:fair use|fair use]] for the sole purpose of identifying an organization or community.
*The image has been declared in some fashion to be released under the [[wikipedia:public domain|public domain]] outside of a Creative Commons License.

Even if another license or rationale may technically allow an image to be hosted by Online Communipedia, the image is ineligible for inclusion by policy.

To mark the image's copyright, select the appropriate option when using [[Special:Upload]]. The uploader must also place in the file summary the source the image came from ''unless'' they select the option indicating it is their own image they are releasing.

=== Screenshots ===
It may be beneficial to the project for screenshots of a community's communications platform (e.g [[wikipedia:Discord|Discord]], [[wikipedia:TeamSpeak|TeamSpeak]]) or website to be taken and placed on the relevant article. The owner of the communications platform and/or website tend to hold all rights over their official logos and branding. However, simple text with formatting - such as is found within websites or in communications platforms - ''tends'' to not be protected by copyright.

As such, '''screenshots that comprise of <u>just text</u>''' '''from such sources''' may be uploaded under any compatible license.

==Instant Commons==

The Online Community Wiki has opted into using the [[mediawikiwiki:InstantCommons|InstantCommons]] feature. As such, any image obtained via such feature may be used freely (so long as there are no additional restrictions that may inhibit use), as all content on that site is de-facto under a compatible license.
Online Communipedia has opted into [[mediawikiwiki:InstantCommons|InstantCommons]]. Wikimedia Commons is a compilation of free images that are either in the public domain or have a Creative Commons license. As such, it is safe to make use of such images ''though this feature''. This is because the feature (in most cases) satisfies relevant licensing requirements, given that a reader can click the image and be directed to the Wikimedia Commons site for attribution and licensing information.

All content provided to this project is released under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License after every edit. Therefore, any editor wishing to contribute must provide content that is:

  • Their own content which they are releasing under the same license,
  • Is content which has a compatible license to CC BY-SA 4.0, or
  • Is being used under fair use law.

It is the obligation of editors providing content to verify that any such content meets the above guidelines. If there is any doubt, administrators may remove such content until verification is made. Note that all content created is by default fully copyrighted with all rights reserved unless explicitly stated otherwise.

Written works[edit | edit source]

The reuse of text verbatim is prohibited by Online Communipedia unless it is released under a compatible Creative Commons license, is in the public domain, or it is a quotation from an individual which is properly attributed. Editors must take great care to not plagiarize a written work or paraphrase too closely. The former is prohibited due to ethical and legal considerations. The latter may constitute a copyright violation and/or an infringement on an author's moral rights, given that it may be seen as a mutilation of the original work.

When reusing text under a compatible license (including the public domain), editors are instructed to use Template:Text attribution or Template:Multiple text attribution (whichever is appropriate). Where to place such templates and how to use them is described on their documentation.

Media[edit | edit source]

A majority of media used at Online Communipedia will be non-free given that, due to the project's mission, media is needed to verify and source information per our content policy. As such, the usage of media is subject to more lengthy guidelines.

Non-free[edit | edit source]

Non-free media is designated as any image, video, file, or other item which is not written text within an article, which does not have an explicit declaration from the original copyright holder that it is released under a compatible license or in the public domain. Such media may only be uploaded if it meets all of the following conditions:

  • It is...
    • Being used as a source for an article, and thus is being used to verify statements made in relation to a community; or
    • Being used as a source to verify that a community is private as part of the invocation of Template:Private community declaration; or
    • Being used as the identifying image of a community through Template:Infobox community, and therefore is the community's logo.
  • It does not infringe on any other policy of this project.
  • It is not information which may infringe the copyright holder's ability to get value out of it.[1]
  • It is not a derivative work of its original.[2]
  • There is no other free version of the material that can be obtained.[3]
  • It is attributed appropriately at Special:Upload.

The above conditions have been written so as to maximize the chance that the media has a fair use rationale. If any of the conditions are not met the piece of non-free media is ineligible for inclusion and may be deleted on sight by any administrator.

Upon upload the source of the material must be explicitly provided within the summary. Even should an image possess a sufficient fair use rationale, if the source is not provided by someone upon challenge within 7 days, it may be deleted on sight by any administrator.

Free[edit | edit source]

Free media is designated as any image, video, file, or other item which is not written text within an article, which has an explicit declaration from the original copyright holder that it is released under a compatible license or in the public domain.

Free media may be used with no restriction so long as the appropriate license is selected at Special:Upload and the source, along with attribution (if applicable), is provided in the image summary. Media under CC0 or in the public domain does not necessitate attribution or mention of its license, but Online Communipedia requires it nonetheless.

Instant Commons[edit | edit source]

Online Communipedia has opted into InstantCommons. Wikimedia Commons is a compilation of free images that are either in the public domain or have a Creative Commons license. As such, it is safe to make use of such images though this feature. This is because the feature (in most cases) satisfies relevant licensing requirements, given that a reader can click the image and be directed to the Wikimedia Commons site for attribution and licensing information.

Footnotes[edit | edit source]

  1. Such as screenshoting any material, text or media, intended only for donators to a community.
  2. Such as fanart of the community itself or any of it's members, a holiday themed version of the community's logo, etc.
  3. For example, if a community has an official variation of it's logo that may be in the public domain (see Template:PD-Simple), that should be used over the copyrighted version.
