This page documents an Online Communipedia policy.

It describes facets of project governance or standards that all editors need to follow.

All content provided to this project is released under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License after every edit. Therefore, any editor wishing to contribute must provide content that is:

Their own content which they are releasing under the same license,
Is content which has a compatible license to CC BY-SA 4.0, or
Is being used under fair use law.

It is the obligation of editors providing content to verify that any such content meets the above guidelines. If there is any doubt, administrators may remove such content until verification is made. Note that all content created is by default fully copyrighted with all rights reserved unless explicitly stated otherwise.

Written works[edit | edit source]

The reuse of text verbatim is prohibited by Online Communipedia unless it is released under a compatible Creative Commons license, is in the public domain, or it is a quotation from an individual which is properly attributed. Editors must take great care to not plagiarize a written work or paraphrase too closely. The former is prohibited due to ethical and legal considerations. The latter may constitute a copyright violation and/or an infringement on an author's moral rights, given that it may be seen as a mutilation of the original work.

When reusing text under a compatible license (including the public domain), editors are instructed to use Template:Text attribution or Template:Multiple text attribution (whichever is appropriate). Where to place such templates and how to use them is described on their documentation.

Media[edit | edit source]

A majority of media used at Online Communipedia will be non-free given that, due to the project's mission, media is needed to verify and source information per our content policy. As such, the usage of media is subject to more lengthy guidelines.

Non-free[edit | edit source]

Non-free media is designated as any image, video, file, or other item which is not written text within an article, which does not have an explicit declaration from the original copyright holder that it is released under a compatible license or in the public domain. Such media may only be uploaded if it meets all of the following conditions:

It is...
- Being used as a source for an article, and thus is being used to verify statements made in relation to a community; or
- Being used as a source to verify that a community is private as part of the invocation of Template:Private community declaration; or
- Being used as the identifying image of a community through Template:Infobox community, and therefore is the community's logo.
It does not infringe on any other policy of this project.
It is not information which may infringe the copyright holder's ability to get value out of it.^[1]
It is not a derivative work of its original.^[2]
There is no other free version of the material that can be obtained.^[3]
It is attributed appropriately at Special:Upload.

The above conditions have been written so as to maximize the chance that the media has a fair use rationale. If any of the conditions are not met the piece of non-free media is ineligible for inclusion and may be deleted on sight by any administrator.

Upon upload the source of the material must be explicitly provided within the summary. Even should an image possess a sufficient fair use rationale, if the source is not provided by someone upon challenge within 7 days, it may be deleted on sight by any administrator.

Free[edit | edit source]

Free media is designated as any image, video, file, or other item which is not written text within an article, which has an explicit declaration from the original copyright holder that it is released under a compatible license or in the public domain.

Free media may be used with no restriction so long as the appropriate license is selected at Special:Upload and the source, along with attribution (if applicable), is provided in the image summary. Media under CC0 or in the public domain does not necessitate attribution or mention of its license, but Online Communipedia requires it nonetheless.

Instant Commons[edit | edit source]

Online Communipedia has opted into InstantCommons. Wikimedia Commons is a compilation of free images that are either in the public domain or have a Creative Commons license. As such, it is safe to make use of such images though this feature. This is because the feature (in most cases) satisfies relevant licensing requirements, given that a reader can click the image and be directed to the Wikimedia Commons site for attribution and licensing information.
