Governance

The community makes use of a non-linear rank structure where each service has a hierarchy of staff, with the head of each hierarchy reporting to the community's owner. The top of the hierarchy is referred to as the head of the service, and they presumably make all decisions relating to it's operation. Immediately below the head are supervisors who oversee groups of base staff members. Each service has multiple groups with the staff members in each group directly reporting to their assigned supervisor.[2]

Staff members also have ranks in the order of trial moderator, moderator, senior moderator, administrator, then senior administrator. These ranks appear to represent levels of access to a service and do not represent authority (e.g it is possible for a senior administrator to report to a senior administrator). Because of this, it is possible for the same staff member to have a different rank for each service.[2]

Separately from the hierarchies are 3 named positions: chief technical officer, community manager, and director of communications. These all appear to be positions that are lateral to the head of a service, and so all presumably directly report to the owner.[2]

Also separate from the hierarchy altogether are various committees that perform specific functions. The committees are player relations, staff processing, interviewing, training, and ban appeals. The player relations committee has 5 sub-committees which are events, rules, outreach, development, and media. Each committee has a similar hierarchical structure to services, but the supervisor position is instead called a vice head. Each sub-committee has a single titled position called lead.[2]

Policies

The rules for the community are compiled in 2 Google Docs: "The Kurva Rules" and "Kurva Gaming Roleplay Rules". The first document describes the rules for every service the community owns, with the particular sections duplicated on the relevant services.[3][4]

General rules

These rules are presumably applicable to all services controlled by the community.

  • Offensive material: Members may not communicate xenophobic, offensive, hurtful, racist, transphobic, sexist, or homophobic ideas towards any person or group through any medium. Mediums include the member's own name, the posting of media, messages, and so on.
  • Harassment: Members may not harass other members or staff members.
  • Toxic behavior: Members may not partake in toxic behavior, such as revealing the personally identifiable information of any person without their consent or threatening bodily harm. If intended as a joke, there is a single warning before a permanent ban.
  • Staff impersonation: Members may not through any means pretend to be a member of the community's staff team when they are not.
  • Begging for privileges: Members may not contact staff members to attain a rank, permissions, or to expedite the review of any application.

  • Joking about suicidality: Members may joke about suicide or death between friends and they should not be descriptive. Members are advised that any perceived attempts to loophole this rule, perceived jokes among strangers, or jokes which are overly descriptive will result in punishment.
    • No exemptions on SCP: Secret Laboratory: Members may not tell someone to kill themselves or make an adjacent statement whatsoever, regardless of the relationship between individuals or any other exemption mentioned in the parent bullet point.
  • Alternate accounts: Members may have alternate accounts but usage of such accounts to circumvent discipline will result in discipline escalation on the main account and the alternate account permanently banned.
  • Mic spam: Members may mic spam but must stop upon request by a staff member or a majority of people present. Broadcasting NSFW material is never permitted.[3]

Discord

These rules are additionally available on the community's Discord in the channel #info.

Platform terms of use: Members are reminded that the terms of use for Discord apply to all behavior.

  • Spam: Members may not spam pings to a person or role, nor may they spam messages, unless there is an extenuating circumstance which would otherwise make it acceptable.

  • Unapproved solicitation: Members may not advertise themselves in any capacity unless done in the Discord channel #advertising.
  • Manipulation of the Discord client: Members may not post links or material which impact the Discord application in a manner which was not intended, such as GIFs which crash the client or links that steal a user's account token.

  • Detainment of Class-D and Scientist players: Players on the NTF team may kill Class-D and Scientist players, even if they are handcuffed. However, the NTF player which handcuffed a killed Class-D or Scientist player may kill their NTF murderer if done within 25 seconds of the detainee's death. The player which handcuffs a Class-D or Scientist player may kill their detainees without consequence.
  • Round delaying: Players are prohibited from delaying the timely conclusion of a round through inaction.
  • Cross teaming: Members of the Chaos and SCP teams may not maintain a positive relationship with the NTF and Facility Guard teams, or vice versa.
  • Exploitation of the game engine: Players may not make use of glitches or exploit mechanics in an unintended manner to gain an unfair advantage over non-participating players.
  • Stream sniping and 3rd party tools: Players may not watch a streamed session of the game to gain an unfair advantage over the streamer, nor make use of 3rd party tools to gain an unfair advantage overall.

  • Attempted circumvention of discipline: Players may not leave the server in an attempt to avoid being banned or receiving punishment from a staff member.
  • Undesirable SCP avoidance: Players may not intentionally get themselves killed, or an adjacent act, as a means to avoid an SCP that they do not wish to play. Leaving the server in response to a legitimate real world event is permitted. Doing so to receive a delivery of some kind is not classified as a legitimate reason to leave the server.
  • Intentional hindrance of team progression: Players are prohibited from actions which will impede the round progression of players on the same team, such as repeatedly closing doors on them, stealing facility keycards, and the like.

  • Staff obstruction: Players may not deliberately lie or deceive staff members when confronted during the investigation of a rule violation. Doing so will escalate the discipline to be received.[3]

KurvedNetwork

Kurva runs a small network of other entities that are under different names and have their own dedicated ownership and staff. These entities are Chaos Theory and KurvedMC.

Chaos Theory is the successor community to UnlimitedSCP, an SCP: Secret Laboratory community which unexpectedly shutdown[5] in the 2nd quarter of 2022. To facilitate in Chaos Theory starting up, Kurva's leadership team worked with UnlimitedSCPs previous development team to obtain the plugins that UnlimitedSCP originally had, and after long discussion and bidding Kurva was given full ownership of the unlimited plugins and x3rt began attempting to update/maintain the plugins. Also, during Chaos Theory's original Discord launch, Kurva had their Discord staff team assist in server moderation temporarily.[6]

KurvedMC is a small community Discord jointly run jointly by Kurva and Chaos Theory for the purpose of maintaining Minecraft servers.

While Kurva and Chaos Theory both refer to the mutual assistance as Kurva having gained ownership over Chaos Theory, Chaos Theory has it's own owner and staff team. It was publicly declared during the initial announcement of ownership that Kurva would not have influence over community direction or governance.[6]

History

Kurva Gaming does not have official documentation or statements from community leaders as to when it was established. As such, editors place the establishment of the community to be in 2018. This has been derived from an announcement by Alby regarding how long Kurva Gaming has existed in comparison to the announcement's date.[8] Kurva Gaming has had 2 owners. Alby was the first who then stepped down in 2021.[9] He was succeeded by Cookie, who is the current owner.[10]

As of July 13, 2023 the community has 7,257 members.[11]

Chronology of events

May 20, 2019
Alby announces that the servers are offline, citing issues with PayPal.[12] The servers returned 3 days later.[13]
August 3
A bot attack was launched against SCP: Secret Laboratory[14] which interrupted a community event scheduled for the same day.[15] A workaround was attempted by using a direct connection IP address[16] which was unsuccessful[17] The event would later go on due to a reprieve in the attack.[18]
March 8, 2020
Cherry announces that community servers are down due to insufficient funds, that a temporary server had been established, and asks members to consider pledging on Patreon.[19] 4 hours later, Alby would clarify that community funds were sufficient, and that the servers went down due to a personal mishap.[20]
March 26
Alby announces that their 2nd and 3rd SCP: Secret Laboratory servers were being turned off to make space for the Rust server which had accumulated 119 concurrent players.[21]
May 16
Cherry announces that the Patreon is raising $200 monthly and thanks the community for putting Kurva in a financially stable position.[22]
May 19
Alby calls for artists to create a new logo for the community. Compensation offerred was a $20 STEAM Gift Card.[23] The result of the call, taking place on May 27, is the now current logo.[24]
May 28
Cherry announces the hosting of an SCP: Secret Laboratory tournament.[25] It would later be cancelled due to a key organizer, TechStar123, being unable to attend.[26]
July 19
TubbyMuffin announces that a staff member's account had been hacked and to not join server invite links they may send.[27]
April 13, 2022
Cookie[b] announces that they now own the SCP: Secret Laboratory community Chaos Theory.[5]
October 13
Cookie makes an announcement that Alby has stepped down as the owner and that they are taking over the position.[9]
September 27
Cookie announces that a rouge staff member performed a myriad of unjustified bans and that the issue was resolved.[28]
August 14, 2023
Cookie announces that a migration to a new server was required due to community services being accessed maliciously by a personal close to them in real life.[29]
September 30
Red Wolf 2524 announces that all uses of suicidal phraseology, along with common variants (e.g "kill yourself", "kill myself", "keep yourself safe"), are prohibited regardless of context and regardless of participant comfort level. Stated purpose being to address "rising concerns of community members surrounding overall toxicity in the community".[30] Kelpy G sends a follow up announcement shortly after to "cast some light".[31]
December 9
Kelpy G announces that the rule prohibiting use of suicidal phraseology enacted on September 30 is effectively overturned. It comes with 2 caveats: the intent is for jokes to remain between friends, and descriptions of how someone may kill themselves is prohibited.[32]

Controversy

On January 14, 2019, Alby made an announcement calling attention to Wendy Williams who allegedly made fun of a "facial deformity" that Alby had. Alby asked members to "investigate" an attached tweet and that they were "outraged by the fact that someone could do this".[33] Alby would later clarify that they do not endorse attacking Wendy.[34]

On June 7, 2020, Alby announced that there was a situation where there were numerous "bans, mutes, and general fuckery" on June 4 and apologized for the behavior. They state that all future major events in the community will be ran and monitored by themselves.[35]

On August 24, 2020, Kurva announced the termination of TechStar123 due to their failure to maintain confidentiality and "[trying] to recruit spies for other members and used promotions to essentially bribe them".[36] TechStar123 made a ping in the official announcements channel on September 18[37], and then made a server-wide ping on October 16.[38]

2023 attempted services takeover

On August 14, 2023, Cookie announced that a Discord server migration was required due to "someone close to [them]" taking over services maliciously. They went on to apologize that the prior management and leadership team underneath them, in general, "didn't manage things properly". Members x3rt and Supra were mentioned by name, the former made "CTO" and the latter made the community manager.[2] Cookie said they would work with the 2 moving forward.[29]

At the same time, a website called https://kurva.info was launched. The front page, written by x3rt, went on to detail that the breach was due to a "relationship going bad". It further stated that Cookie was pursuing legal action against "the user in question" as they allegedly took control of the Patreon account. x3rt stated they were working on migrating the SCP:SL servers to a new machine. They also wrote a bot that would automatically re-assign appropriate roles to users.[39]

An announcement from x3rt was made 1 and a half hours after the original stating that access to Patreon was restored.[40]
